There are lots of cool, original styles…. The acting, choreography, sets, and new weapons are here a joy to watch. Love the hand-held trident-like daggers!
The final fight sequence is brutal 20 minute knockdown good guy vs bad guy finale exciting, and interesting to watch, and all the actors do a great job in their roles. A must watch for Cheh Chang fans. Great fun. There's the usual amount of fairly rote kung fu intrigue, and a decent amount of great fight sequences. There's a somewhat comedic slant to it all that isn't all that surprising given that it was released a year after Jackie Chan's two breakout kung-fu comedy mega hits; Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and Drunken Master, though it's never as sophomoric as those movies.
The showdown alone makes this worth seeing for any fan of great martial arts movies, and we have some great fight scenes in between. There are both funnier scenes in a bit of a Jackie Chan vein, using all kinds of things as weapons, and more brutal ones like a guy getting a sword shoved up his ass. But as it is, this is still great stuff and the showdown was just fucking awesome. For Zhishan his weakest parts are his eyes and his crotch. He attacked the crap out of that crotch.
Thank heavens for dirty fighting Wudang masters! Rescuers tries a little too hard for comedy but makes up for it with colorful fights and chopstick duels. Philip Kwok is one of my absolute favorites, for me he steals every Shaw Brothers film I've seen him in. This one is no exception, and he gets a lot more screen time. I could watch an entire series of films of him just messing around with restaurant patrons. The arrival of these films to digital platforms and the introduction of the genre to new generations is timely. For me, it was big escapism and it gave me camaraderie with other people around the world. The library is vast and overwhelming over films in all , and using an organizing principle, like the VENOM MOB, helps provide a point of entry for fans new to the genre.
This seems like a really nice and cool way for people to get in on the most classic kung fu titles without having the benefit of a great video store or older sibling who knows some shit.
