In both cases we were successful by using another memory stick in one case my real Sony 2GB and in another their smaller spare SanDisk. Don't know why but now I'm convinced not even to bother trying with the Sony 1GB SanDisks are definitely the best sticks, I have two of them and haven't had any problems.

If you're having trouble creating or reading files via the normal updater, do NOT use easy installers!
Odds are likely that any file you put on the stick won't be correct and the easy installer will wind up bricking your PSP. While many of the modules are decrypted, the problem is that a lot more modules are left un-decrypted, which means that Devhook emulation is currently not possible.
At this point, I won't speculate about when it will get decrypted. Let's just hope for the best! Also, thanks to Mathieulh for clearing up the confusion. Yes, the latest firmware for the PSP is out!
